Heading out over the large sets...
Conditions for competitive wave sailing don't come much better than this...
November 2010: Rob Jones Crowned Irish Wave Champion!
We are pleased to report that Rob Jones (Riks brother) has just won the 2010 IWA wave sailing championship title. We'd like to offer our congratulations on his success this year.
Rob's not generally one for competing as he's normally all sailed-out around his home of Brandon Bay, but with Ireland presenting such a strong base of windsurfing talent and of course such classic venues, it was about time he traveled to partake in the events and show the new guard how the not so new guard (getting old now bruv!) can still more than hold their own whilst out enjoying excellent wave conditions.
Next on the agenda for Rob is a two month trip to Chile (December & January) along with his better half Rosie, both of whom are looking forward to ripping up the conditions out there in locations that have rarely been sailed. Bus Eireann have kindly granted Rob two months leave from driving the school bus to allow him time for this trip. Hopefully that will see him improve further (I heard that waterstart practice is required!) so again he'll be a force to be reckoned with throughout 2011. Anyone who requires repairs (his main job) should get in touch before he leaves, or in February when he'll be fully open for business again.

  2.5m Action Shots
As many of you know Rob is one for heading out in extreme conditions when most of us would be much happier remaining on the beach! Recently the stormy conditions have been really extreme on the west coast of Ireland giving him the perfect opportunity to try out his latest creation which is a 2.5m!
Graphically this has been modeled on one of the original Pryde Combat sails...see some images below...how cool does that look huh!?! Good use of your repair materials and workshop time Rob...and also the action isn't that bad either!
Heading to the water...with the cut down mast and boom, and miniature board, this 2.5m doesn't look so small huh!?! Heading out...all looking good and nice twist on the sail! These conditions require full commitment...charging out is the only way to go! Bosh - take off! Now that makes the board look fairly big in relation to the scale of the rig! So is this an intentional one handed back loop? Classic how everything simply gets blown away downwind! Pictures often don't show how windy it is...but this one catches the ferocity quite nicely...white-out in the bay! It's windy when sheeting in a 2.5m for a bottom turn simply isn't an option... Sensible sized kit for the conditions makes this like just another day in the office...! Maybe now would be a good time to pull the chute...
